Influenced by Dave(s)
I wanted to take a look at some of the guys who have contributed to my growth in Christ over the years. I am starting with guys named Dave.
I play the guitar. Not pansy guitar. I play metal. I own a Gibson Les Paul and it screams through my Vox amp. I love Wah Pedals and crunching distortion. I love Megadeth. Yes, Dave Mustain is one of my influences. Actually, I was more a Marty Friedman fan. But I could not play his stuff as easily. So I decided to be more like Dave.
Wait, I’m sorry, I was going to talk about theology (to which one can still throw up the horns).
I have shared my story about attending a mega-church (not a Megadeth) after a late night party / drinking binge. For those who do not remember, here it is in a nutshell:
I used to drink myself silly 3-5 days a week. I would attend church either on Sunday or Wednesday only to slip back into an alcoholic coma shortly after. Many times alone.
After one such Saturday night, I attended church all the while wondering why Yager left me with the feeling of having a rock stuck in my stomach. The pastor on the stage was talking about the freedom from addiction and sin only Christ could offer. My ears perked up. Afterward, the pastor asked anyone who wanted prayer to stand up and he would pray for them. I rose to my feet. As he prayed I could feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit. I started balling. I devoted my life to Christ in that moment.
I learned this pastor had the same issues. He was a party guy and a drug addict. He gave his life to Christ at 20 and was living for Jesus ever since. I have had a chance to come by his house on several occasions and had several good conversations with him. He loves C.S. Lewis and believes Christians should learn more about Matthew 5 & 6 before they start spouting off theologies they probably do not understand.
And yes, he is fan of Calvin (tongue slightly in cheek).
His name is Dave Workman. He was the first real godly influence in my life. I learned from him that prayer is NOT optional, reading is the best way to learn, and Jesus has grace for anyone who will receive it, including drug addicts, alcoholics, or any other sinner. Thanks to him I was introduced to The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis, How to Read the Bible for All it’s Worth by Fee and Stewart, and The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoffer.
I pray God continues to bless him and the work he does to further the kingdom.
Now you share.
Who were your first theological / godly influences? Why?
