Be a Man Monday

Every Monday, until I say otherwise, will address issues for men. Ladies, feel free to read along. I think you can enjoy this.

So, why Be a Man Monday? Last week, I told you I was thinking a lot about what it means to be a man. I submitted my article to Reddit (kind of like Digg) and received a comment that irked me. I was told, per the comment, that being a man had nothing to do with treating a lady with respect and my whole article was hogwash. One commenter went as far as to say that I knew “nothing of what it means to be a man.”  Being this exchange was on the internet, I let the comments from what appeared to be a 12-year-old go in stride.

I spent some time reading other sites about true manliness. There are three things people talk about when it comes to being a man:

  1. Spirituality
  2. Maturity
  3. Relationships

I am pretty sure you can find thousands of sites on any of these topics.

Most do it well enough that another is not needed.  What is needed is for people to counter-act some of what has become popular and what is false. I think it is also beneficial to talk about our spiritual masculinity alongside our maturity and relationships. Every Monday I am going to explore this testosterone trifecta with all of you. I will share my own findings, struggles, and successes.

What about the women?

I would encourage women to read this too. It might help you to have some insight into what men go through as well as learn how to help your men (and God knows, we need help) and pray for us. In reality, there are three groups I hope to benefit by writing about true masculinity: Women, Men, and the Church. So please, do not “tune out” on Mondays. Throw your two cents in, question us, explore with us.

How do we begin?

I want your input.  The first thing I want to know is, men, how did you “woo” your lady? The followup is, if you are married, how do you still “woo” her (if you are not married, how do you plan to woo her after marriage)?

Ladies, let us know if our ideas are good or not.

Leave it in the comments, ladies and gentlemen.

Maybe by the time I am finished writing this comment, someone who is actually married will have gone first…

I like writing the completely out of the blue love notes, or the completely unexpected gift (host of ways to do that). It's like giving a birthday gift, minus the obligation. Which seems to make it a lot more heartfelt and meaningful. "I remembered you when I didn't have to. I am showing you how much you mean to me when there was no expectation."

I think you may have taken most of the good ones. Not bad for a "yet to be married" guy!

I just smack her on the butt and say, "hey baby!"

LOL! I couldn't resist. Maybe I should repent.

But seriously, I usually tell her how much she means to me and our family. I will play with her hair and cancel my plans so that she can have fun with her friends. I suck at opening doors.

    How I won her…I'm hot.
    How I keep her…I'm hot.
    J/K…………………..or am I?

I think I married a very practical woman. She appreciated me having gas money to drive the 30 miles early in our relationship to see her more than the flowers I could have bought her. Since we were friends for a year before we started seeing each other, Most of the time spent prior to dating was just spent being around each other, NOT wooing. I guess it just comes down to being genuine, if that makes any sense.

We have been together for nearly nine years now. We are just as loving and playful with each other as when we first started dating. We have great communication; a true partnership beyond any relationship I had when I was younger. As far as continually wooing her, I still do everything I did when we first started dating. I remain a gentleman instead of ACTING like a gentleman.

Don't let the Trolls on the Internet get you down. They are likely still in an early stage of manhood, a transition stage if you will, that we all go through and hopefully outgrow. You know the stage I mean…(wink wink)

      Puberty?

I think good spouses usually start as good friendships. If both are mature, they will see this is very important. I married my best friend and it sounds like you did too.

@Jonathan Your first comment totally surprised me… but then your second comment seemed to fit (the part about repenting). LOL You and your wifey are so cute!
